H.E. Ambassador Dr. Hisham Al-Alawi attended in Cape Town on 19/4/2012 the Ceremony for Urban Age Award sponsored by Alfred Herrhausen Foundation of the Deutsche Bank in Berlin.
The ceremony was also attended by Ms. Helen Zille Head of the Democratic Alliance party as well as Mr. Joseph Ackerman, the Executive Director of the Deutsche Bank, and Mr. Wolfgang Nowak, CEO of the Alfred Herrhausen Foundation, in addition to a group of experts, engineers, university professors, businessmen and journalists. The award is presented annually by the Alfred Herrhausen Foundation to projects aimed at development of civil societies as well as projects aiming to help local people by improving their living, social and health conditions.
After the ceremony, the Ambassador updated Ms. Helen Zille, head of the Democratic Alliance Party, on the latest developments in Iraq and its success in hosting the Arab Summit in Baghdad, and its positive outcomes. He also thanked Mr. Wolfgang Nowak, and suggested that Baghdad may be selected in the future for the Urban Age Award. He also thanked him for confirming that his organization will send invitations to the Governor of Baghdad and the Governor of Basra, to attend the Foundation's conference that will be held in London in December 2012. The Ambassador also had a discussion with Professor Edgar Peters, Director of the African Centre for Cities based at the University of Cape Town, about the possibility of cooperation between the Centre and Iraqi colleges and universities interested in developing cities and civil societies.
