His Excellency Ambassador Mr. Bassam Darwish visited on 5/3/2012 the Embassy of the Republic of Iraq in Pretoria as part of courtesy visits to Arab ambassadors after presenting his credentials as Ambassador of Syrian Arab Republic in South Africa.
The Ambassadors discussed the situation in the region and the situation in Syria in particular where the Syrian Ambassador expressed his appreciation for Iraq's position on the events of the current crisis in the Syrian Arab Republic and the keenness of his government to end the violence and achieve political reform without foreign intervention. H.E Ambassador Al-Alawi commented that Iraq, by virtue of its recent experience and the difficulties experienced during the last three decades of the embargo, international sanctions and the U.S. occupation, it does not deem the military intervention as the best way to resolve the crisis in Syria since it leads to the destruction of infrastructure and loss of peoples lives, but instead to concentrate on solving the Syrian problem by responding to the requirements of the majority of people in political reform and contribute to the cessation of violence and to prevent foreign intervention.
The Ambassadors also discussed the importance of taking advantage of the Arab summit taking place in Baghdad at the end of March 2012, to adopt viable solutions for reform and stability as well as to promote the spirit of joint Arab action.
