The Iraqi Ambassador to South Africa, Dr. Hisham Alalawi visited his American counterpart in Pretoria Mr. Donald Gips on 19/8/2011 at the American Embassy as part of courtesy visits to Ambassadors and heads of diplomatic missions accredited in South Africa.
At the beginning of the meeting the American Ambassador welcomed his Iraqi counterpart and praised the improvement in the security situation throughout the last four years. He also expressed optimism about the future of Iraq in terms of the standard of living and Iraq’s ability to increase import and export in the next ten years to enhance its regional and International role.
Both Ambassadors talked about the current situations in the Arab world especially in Libya and Syria. The Iraqi Ambassador stressed that the Iraqi government supports the demands of the Arabic people’s reform to political leading to build democratic systems and urges their governments to listen to the legitimate demands of the people that would help to promote security and stability in the region.
The Ambassador also talked about bilateral relations between Iraq and South Africa which is one of the countries Iraq sees as a potential market to sell Iraqi oil to, as well as the possibility to sign a number of MOUs to enhance relations of various fields.
Both sides further discussed issues of common interest which can establish relations of good cooperation in the common issues between the two countries and South Africa.
